Code Of Conduct

"Discipline in a school is not just dealing with individual acts of student misconduct in an ad-hoc manner but is a part of the behavioral culture of the school".

A RATIONALE: THE PURPOSE OF A SCHOOL DISCIPLINE CODE

1. To create a culture and ethos in the School that

  • promotes effective teaching and learning.
  • ensures that the school’s professed aims and objectives are fulfilled without distraction or disruption.
  • contributes to the safety and security of the school community.
  • encourages responsible behavior and discourages misconduct
  • helps to foster in students values and attitudes that contribute to personal effectiveness and good citizenship
  • develops in students a capacity for self-discipline

2. To ensure that student misconduct is responded to in a professional, reasonable, humane and consistent manner across the School by

  • articulating clearly the school’s expectations of appropriate student behavior
  • ensuring that the entire school community shares a unified perception on what constitutes student indiscipline/misconduct and the consequences that follow the breach of school rules and regulations.
CREATING A CULTURE OF DISCIPLINE WITHIN THE SCHOOL

Through the school's discipline code, the entire school community commits itself to the creation of an ethos and atmosphere in the school that fosters desirable behavior, discourages misconduct and is conducive to effective teaching and learning. "

The distinguishing characteristics of this 'culture of discipline' to which we aspire are as follows:

1. The school building and campus are clean and well-maintained. Classrooms are attractive, student-friendly and equipped with furniture and fittings that ensure a comfortable and safe learning environment.

2. Students are provided with facilities and activities that engage them actively, add value to school life and encourage them to get involved in the community beyond the school.

3. Teaching faculty are experienced professionals, capable of engaging students intellectually and emotionally and who regularly upgrade their knowledge, skills and methodology. Effective teaching-learning is in evidence.

4. There is evidence of effective classroom management by teachers who are trained to improve their classroom management and discipline skills.

6. There is a clear sense of purpose in the school, with teachers and students moving from one class to another without wasting time between lessons. Movement in corridors is orderly and purposeful.

7. Teachers are pro-active and appear to care about about their students and what happens in school.

8. Teachers and students share a warm and friendly relationship. At the same time, teachers maintain their professional dignity while students are courteous and respectful.

9. Teachers model the kind of behavior expected of students.

10. Students and staff attend school regularly and punctually. There is a strong sense of loyalty and 'belongingness' among staff and students towards the school.

11. Value education is imbedded in the school's curriculum and is also promoted through regular school assemblies and personalized counseling.

12. Students are well-groomed and greet teachers and visitors courteously.

13. Students respect school and other's property. There is no evidence of vandalism.

14. There is no physical violence among students. Teachers and administrators do not resort to corporal punishment in any form.

15. There is a cordial and productive interaction between parents and school. Parents are supportive of the school's policies and practices.

EXPECTATIONS FROM STUDENTS:

LEARN ALL YOU CAN

  • Be alert and attentive in class and participate in class activities.
  • Bring relevant material - books, stationery, calculators - to class. Avoid borrowing.
  • Complete classwork and homework assignments regularly.
  • Be a self-learner. Use the resources of the school library. Do independent research.
  • Take formative and summative assessments seriously. Strive for personal improvement.
  • Be pro-active. Approach your teacher for clarifications and feedback on your progress.
  • Participate in school activities to develop communication and leadership skills and to grow in assurance and self-confidence.
  • Participate in community-service activities.

BE IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME

  • Attend school regularly and be on time for your classes.
  • Know your daily time-table and move from one class to another briskly and purposefully.
  • Be sure to have the appropriate permission if you need to miss a class for any reason.
  • Report for co-curricular activities at the correct time and venue.
  • Use the school elevators only if you have the requisite permission to do so.
  • Find out which areas of the school are ‘out-of-bounds’ and avoid being there.

RESPECT MEMBERS OF THE SCHOOL STAFF

  • Your teachers will be happy to maintain a cordial and friendly relationship with you, but you are expected to address your teachers and other staff members politely and behave courteously and respectfully towards them at all times.
  • Be obedient and follow teachers’ instructions

RESPECT YOUR FELLOW-STUDENTS

  • Be courteous and considerate to fellow students, respectful to your seniors and helpful to your juniors. Avoid any form of bullying.
  • Avoid speech and behavior which may cause embarrassment or injury to other students.
  • Avoid physical violence at all times. Resolve misunderstandings and disputes in a civilized manner.
  • Acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of others.
  • Respect the points of view of others.
  • Respect the rights of others to learn.
  • Cooperate with class monitors, school prefects and members of the Student Council.

MAINTAIN HIGH ETHICAL STANDARDS

  • Be familiar with the school’s policy on Academic Honesty.
  • Avoid plagiarism when writing academic assignments. Acknowledge the sources of your research.
  • Avoid dishonesty of any form in assessments and school examinations.
  • Be truthful.
  • Be respectful of the property of others: avoid damaging, vandalizing or stealing the belongings of others.
  • Take responsibility for your actions and accept reprimands or punishments with good grace if you deserve them.

LOOK AFTER YOUR SCHOOL

  • Avoid throwing litter in any part of the school campus and in your classrooms.
  • Pick up litter and deposit it in a litter-bin.
  • Take care of your lockers and the furniture and fittings in your classrooms.
  • Keep your classrooms neat and clean: furniture should be arranged in an orderly way, display boards must be well-maintained and rooms  free of litter.
  • Inform the authorities if you notice anything in the school campus or building that is a threat to your safety and security.

MAINTAIN PERSONAL DIGNITY AND DECORUM

  • Familiarise yourself with the students’ dress code and grooming guidelines and follow them.
  • Wear your school uniform with pride and respect. It is a part of your identity in and outside your school.
  • Avoid loud speech in the classroom, school corridors and the canteen. Know the difference between an ‘indoor’ voice and an ‘outdoor’ voice.
  • Follow the rules of the school library. It is a place for silent study and research.
  • Avoid running in the school building - especially on the stairs -as this can lead to accidents.
  • Greet visitors to school politely. Be helpful to them.
  • Maintain the highest standards of conduct and speech when visiting other schools or when on school excursions. Remember that on such occasions, you are the ambassadors of the school.
